Catheters for large animals

The Swan-Ganz catheters can be used for right heart catheterization in large animals in a clinical environment and in research settings. The catheters are placed percutaneously into the jugular vein and advanced through the cranial vena cava, the right atrium and the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery. Their length of 1.8m exceeds the standard maximum length of Swan-Ganz catheters manufactured for use in people (1.1m). Therefore, they are suitable for use in larger species such as horses, cattle, rhinos, camels etc. The catheters can be used to measure central venous/right atrial pressure, right ventricular pressure and pulmonary artery pressure.

Three versions are available all balloon-tipped and therefore allow measurement of pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PWCP). Two versions contain a lumen with an opening at the distal tip for pressure measurement using a fluid-filled system and an appropriate pressure transducer. The third version contains a high-fidelity pressure sensor located at the catheter tip for direct, highly-accurate pressure measurement, primarily to be used in research settings. Finally, inclusion of a thermistor allows measuring stroke volume and cardiac output by thermodilution.

The catheters have appropriate torque characteristics and a natural curvature which, together with flow assistance, ultrasound or fluoroscopy, allows accurate placement.

The catheters are packaged non-sterile and should be cleaned and/or sterilised prior to use in accordance with the customer’s own procedures. The Swan Ganz catheters may be reused although the balloons are fragile and may need replacing between uses. Customers can either order new balloons and fit them themselves or return the catheters to Gaeltec. Please contact the office for details.
